Worker's day

EARLY YEARS

We have started our first week of our new topic about Transport. We are exploring forms of travel by road, such as cars and lorries. The children have helped to create a big Topic board which displays a background including the sky, mountains, a road and the sea. Each week we will learn about a different way to travel and we will reveal them on this board too by using different creative methods. We also continued with our Cambridge Learners and Letters and Sounds books.

PRIMARY

With the 1st of May this week, students have been ensuring their studies continue as best as possible. In mathematics, we have been focusing on two areas of study. Firstly, students have been continuing to develop their understanding of space, shape and position. Secondly, we have been preparing for our upcoming (date to be confirmed) progress check point assessment for year three and year four students.

In science we have continued to delve into our new topic of ‘Look! Listen’, focusing on sources of light, contributing factors that affect luminosity and developing our personal sense of hearing. On Tuesday we undertook a walk and listen activity with everyone recording the sources of sounds that we could hear internally at the school and externally. As students progressed through the activity, we shared our ideas, questions and expanded our vocabulary using scientific based language to describe.

For sport the week, students continued their work on the fundamental movement skills in conjunction with observation and listening. We achieved this through simple listening activities as well as game based observations.

This week students also worked on developing their painting skills, creating ‘wash’ effects using the colour blue and tissues. As well as this, students were taught simple options to create darker and lighter versions of colours for a wash effect. Helen then demonstrated additional techniques using salt and cellophane to add additional texture to the final product and paint interesting skies and seas.The students also revisited and extended their map skills.

English

This week we worked on poetry, in particular, kennings. We saw how they used a combination of nouns or adjectives with a verb turned into an adjective to use language creatively. We also did some language and vocabulary work around the topic of the fashion industry, and this will lead us to take a look at phrasal verbs.

MATHEMATICS

On Monday they have doing an exam. On Friday, after giving back the exam, each group has started a new chapter. Group 1 it is about multiplication and division with two digits; Group 2 it is about Squares and Square Roots; Group 3 it is about Solving Linear Equations and Group 4 it is about ratio and proportion.

PHYSICS

They have done this worksheet related to the Chapter 2.1.What is Energy? where they have made a table with four foods, three activities and the minutes to burn off each food depending on the activity.

CHEMISTRY

I have given back the exam of last week and we have started a new Chapter: The Structure of the Earth. Until the end of the year, in Chemistry we will be doing Geology. They have learned about different Models trying to explain through Observations and Data Collection the Earth's internal structure. Now several teams have to simulate that they are going to a congress and they have to defend their assigned model: Flat, Spherical, Hollow or Modern Earth Model.

BIOLOGY

We have closed the chapter about Tissues and Organs, doing some exercises of the Workbook. Since we are going to do an exam, we have revised the Vocabulary of the three last chapters solving a Wordsearch: 3.8. Plant and Animal Cells; 3.9. Specialised Cells & 3.11. Tissues and Organs.

Geography

This week we learnt how to identify the height and slope of a place in an OS map, looking at the contour lines and spot heights. We also talked about mountains and why they have always been so important to humanity. For next class, everybody has to find the highest mountains (and their elevation in metres above sea) in: the world, the United Kingdom and the Iberian Peninsula.

History

This week we learnt about the importance of learning history. We also talked about the International Workers’ Day and why we celebrate this day. We learnt about the conditions of workers on the XIX century and realized how many improvements on their quality of life have been achieved from then. However, many examples of miserable work conditions can be seen in many countries today. Lastly, we’ve seen a photographic project by Lewis Hine, who took pictures of children working in America, in the beginning of the XX century. His work helped the government enforce laws to restrict child labour in America.
