Cosmocaixa trip

2 Feb 2019

EARLY YEARS

This week we have been using our Traditional Tale, 'Goldilocks and Three Bears’ to encompass not only literacy but numeracy too. We have been story sequencing and ordering our numbers as well as looking at number formation, all with this theme. The children were so looking forward to presenting the story to all at the Project Presentation and were very pleased with their performances!

PRIMARY

This week the highlight was our trip to CosmoCaixa, where we did a workshop on forces and visited an exhibit about robots. There was one called Felix who followed us around. In the workshop we learned about different forces that make toys work, and we also looked at ways of making electricity and that not all materials a conductors of electricity. Neither are all forms of energy sustainable. Petrol, for example, is not sustainable as one day we will run out of it. In our lessons this week we have mainly concentrated on preparing our presentations, but we have also enjoyed preparing the play (we are beginning to learn our words) and writing our diaries as usual. In Mathematics this week, we started preparation for an upcoming progression test in mathematics for Year 3 and 4 students.  While this test will provide an indication of student´s progression, by no means is it an ultimate assessment. Year 1 and 2 students continued their work on number operations and started talking about shapes.

SECONDARY

English

We are continuing to work hard on answering comprehension questions properly as well as looking at grammar and punctuation related to speech in written texts. Some students thought about how to plan their written work in order to express their knowledge more accurately. We are also looking at the difference between objective and subjective (bias) writing and gaining an awareness of purpose and audience when we write.

Mathematics

This week we have finished Algebra or “working with letters and numbers” closing the Chapter with an exam they have been doing on Friday. At Geometry, Level 1 has made 4 (!) “angle makers” to show different types of angles, and level 2 and 3 have learned to construct triangles given the length of the sides...therefore they only use a ruler and a pair of compasses!

Physics

We have been studying the objects in the Night Sky: Do they give light by themselves or do they reflect the light we see? Is it orbiting the Sun or the Earth?

Each pupil has been given a Night Sky Object to study to prepare a Presentation for Primary. The objective is that what they learn they have to be able to transmit, to teach and to check if the little ones have learnt it!

Chemistry

After studying some Materials and the Elements, this week we have learned that each element has a Symbol that is internationally recognised. This means that everybody: the Chinese, the Bulgar, the German know that Fe means Iron, and that Na is Sodium. Really easy to communicate to each other.

Biology

Some of the students did the exam and we have started to correct it. We have consolidated the Characteristic of Living Things synthesized in two words: Mrs.Gren.

History:

This week in History class, we continued doing activities related to the Bayeux Tapestry. By matching captions to scenes of the tapestry and then arranging them in chronological order, each group is building the History of the Battle of Hastings. The tapestry is made with embroidered pictures; however, some scenes have a short description in Latin. It’s been interesting to learn some Latin words!
